Air Duct Cleaning FAQ — Lakeland, FL
Common questions from homeowners in Lakeland and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.
How often do air ducts in a Lakeland house actually need cleaning?
Most homes here land in a three-to-five year rhythm, and the reason is the climate. Lakeland runs an eight to nine month cooling season, so your blower is pushing air through that duct system far more hours per year than a house up north. Add oak and pine pollen, sandy soil tracked in off the yard, lovebug season, and dewpoints sitting in the low 70s at night, and the dust load builds faster than people expect. If you've had remodeling, a pest problem, new flooring, or you've just moved into a 1960s block ranch with original ductwork, don't wait on the calendar.

Walk me through what actually happens during the cleaning.
We start by looking at the system before anything gets touched, including the attic runs, the trunk lines, the return, and the blower compartment. Then we hook a negative-air vacuum to the trunk so everything we dislodge travels one direction, into the machine. Each supply and return gets agitated with brushes or compressed-air whips, and we clean the blower wheel and coil face where access allows. At the end we walk you through before-and-after photos of the same runs so you can see what came out.

How much of my day does this take?
A typical single-system Lakeland home runs three to five hours. Bungalows near Lake Morton and Dixieland sometimes take longer because the ductwork was added after the fact and the attic access is tight. Larger subdivision homes north and south of the city with two air handlers can push toward a full day. We give you a realistic window when we see the system, not a guess over the phone.

Why would two houses on the same street be quoted differently?
The vent count is the first thing. After that it's the condition and material of the ducts, and that varies by era of the house. Original rigid sheet metal or ductboard trunks in a 1950s-1970s block ranch take more labor than newer insulated flex, and damaged or crushed flex in a vented attic sometimes needs repair before cleaning makes sense. A second air handler, heavy contractor dust from a remodel, rodent or insect debris, or a blower wheel that's never been pulled all push the number up. We look at your system, explain what we found, and you get the price in writing before we start.

Do you move furniture around or leave a mess behind?
We ask you to clear a path to the vents and the air handler closet. We'll shift a light chair or a side table, but we don't move heavy pieces, electronics, or anything fragile. Floors get drop cloths, hoses get mats under them, and the vacuum stays under negative pressure the whole time so debris doesn't blow back into the room. Registers come off, get washed, and go back on the wall.

My airflow is bad. Is that the dryer vent or the AC ducts?
Look at where the symptom shows up. Clothes taking two cycles, a dryer that's hot to the touch, or a laundry room that feels damp points at the dryer vent, especially in slab-on-grade homes where the duct runs up and across the attic. Weak air at the registers, uneven room temperatures, dust settling right after you clean, or a musty smell when the system kicks on points at the HVAC side. If you're getting both at once, we check both while we're there.

You find mold growing inside the ducts. Then what?
We stop and show you. In Central Florida, growth on the coil, in the drain pan, or on the inside face of ductboard is common, because humid air meets cold metal all summer long. Surface growth on cleanable metal we can treat with an EPA-registered antimicrobial after the mechanical cleaning. If it's grown into porous ductboard or flex liner, cleaning won't fix it and we'll tell you the section needs replacement instead of selling you a service that won't hold. Heavy or widespread growth gets referred to a licensed remediator.

Will you put in a new filter while you're there?
Yes. We pull the old one, check the size and the MERV rating, and install a fresh one if you have a spare on hand. If you don't, we usually carry common sizes for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, and American Standard equipment. Putting a dirty filter back into a system we just cleaned makes no sense, so it's part of the job. We'll also tell you how often to swap it, which in a nine-month cooling season is more often than the box claims.

Can someone get out here today?
Often, yes. We hold slots open for same-day calls, and mornings are easier to fill than afternoons during June-through-September storm season, when daily convective thunderstorms slow attic work down. Call early and tell us your address, how many systems you have, and roughly how many vents. If today's booked, we'll usually get you on the schedule for the next day.

How far out from Lakeland do you travel?
Lakeland proper is our base, and we cover Polk County broadly from there. That takes in the older neighborhoods ringed by the lakes, Parker, Hollingsworth, Morton, Mirror, and Bonny, along with the newer build-out north and south of the city on what used to be citrus groves, pasture, and phosphate land. We also work the I-4 corridor between Tampa and Orlando. If you're not sure whether your address falls inside the area, just ask when you call.
